1774, Church file Johannes Birkenstock

The Book of BIRKENSTOCK is a premium coffee table title that takes the reader on an immersive, never-before-seen journey through the brand’s remarkable visual history.

The book presents BIRKENSTOCK’s history through over 1,000 photographs, illustrations, and documents, organized along a continuous timeline from 1774 to 2024. This timeline, measuring 130m in total, is divided across 608 pages. As a result, some images span multiple pages, starting on one and continuing on the next, maintaining the flow of the historical narrative. The timeline is supplemented by 100 historical events for additional context, alongside sections that explore the social conditions of each era. A 60-page index at the end of the book categorizes the content by model, country, document type and other metadata.

Three different types of paper divide the book into sections. The first section, featuring archival and historical documents, is printed on yellow-tinted, semi-transparent paper. The middle section, with a focus on photographs and advertisements, uses glossy, greyish paper. The final section is printed on bright white, glossy paper, similar to those used in fashion magazines and art catalogs. The blind-stamped cover is made of extra rough cardboard, featuring the first recorded mention of a Birkenstock shoemaker from 1774.

The whole layout was generated using custom code and an API linked to a dedicated online database.

An online database was created from the largely analog archive. A total of 2,500 objects with many metadata keywords for year, type, category, location, shoe model, and many others.

These data are retrieved via an API interface. In addition to text and image information, layout decisions such as the column width of each image in the layout are also retrieved and interpreted using JavaScript.

Based on this information, the images and texts are rendered in the DOM. DPI count and cropping are also considered during the automized placement.

Then, page numbers are automatically placed and the index pages with the respective references to these page numbers are generated. In the final step, single-page PDFs are exported.
