Romanian artist Adrian Ghenie engages with Egon Schiele’s lost works—preserved only in black-and-white photographs—and reinterprets them through a contemporary lens. In the exhibition and catalogue, Schiele and Ghenie face each other and interact. Almost like the distorted representation of a reflection.
Smartphones and digital processes are integral to Ghenie’s artistic approach, both as tools and as subjects within his paintings. This digital perspective shaped our catalogue design: a glossy black cover and book block evoke the feel of a smartphone, while the inside pages resemble an iPhone’s photo library. Full-page images, zooms, crops, and varied cut-outs create a dynamic, screen-like experience, with thumbnails of adjacent images appearing at the bottom—an echo of the scrolling interface.
The exhibition design by sub.global also incorporate the theme of reflection, reinforcing the interplay of light, shadow, and perception.
