With over 350 years on its back, the Bavarian State Opera is one of the leading opera houses in the world and since Nikolaus Bachler took over the general management of the opera in 2009, one of our biggest clients. Situated on the Max Joseph Platz, next to high-street shops and a skip away from the Marienplatz, the opera is one of Munich’s main attractions. Its imposing architecture houses the Opera, the Bavarian State Ballet, and the Bavarian State Orchestra. Since 2013 Mr. Kirill Petrenko has held the tune as General Music Director of the Bayerische Staatsoper, while the Russian Mr. Igor Zelensky joined as Ballet Director for the 2017–2018 season.
Mirko’s personal inspiration in taking on the task of corporate design for such a large cultural institution were the works of Pierre Mendell.
Mendell was my greatest idol in terms of poster design and pure graphics. He was always able to tell entire stories with only a few elements.
The Posters for the Bavarian State Opera have always been collectors items by opera and design devotees alike. Each season a new subject marks the overall theme of our design work. In close collaboration with the opera, content and visuals are shaped by tailor-made contributions from international artists, photographers, and illustrators. With the coming of each new opera season, a poster campaign rolls out, along with the matching program book and a new issue of the opera’s magazine Max Joseph. And when its time for Munich’s opera festival installations crop up throughout the city and even on and around the opera house itself. All artworks of this season were created in collaboration with Mark Titchner.

Max Joseph Magazine
Max Joseph is the magazine of the Bavarian State Opera. It aims to analyze new productions in terms of historic and current political or social topics. It’s pages initiate discussion and create connections between the opera repertoire and the visitor’s experience. In close collaboration with the opera we choose photographers, visual artists, illustrators and also contributed our own visuals. Each issue follows a topic that sharpens and highlights the season’s general theme from different perspectives, underlined by its unique design and production.
